Doctors Hate AI!
You might not believe me. But it’s true.
Maybe "Hate" is too strong. Maybe they just don’t "Trust" AI.
Doctors say AI makes mistakes. And that this can cost lives. And I agree.
A year ago, I walked away from AI in healthcare. I think I made a mistake.
I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
Healthcare is in crisis worldwide. AI may be its only hope.
The thing is, doctors make mistakes too. And those mistakes can be fatal.
Senior doctors don’t "Trust" new grads when they leave university.
They supervise them. They mentor them. They upskill them.
They limit their scope of practice to keep them from harm.
And when they make mistakes, they talk about it.
The new grad learns. And tries not to make the same mistake again.
But they probably will.
Over time, they get better.
I’ve realized we’re looking at AI in healthcare all wrong.
And it’s stopping AI from being used where we need it most.
We need to treat AI like a new grad.
We need to train it. We need to put it to work.
But we also need to supervise it. And we need to limit its scope.
When it makes a mistake, we need to teach it.
Most important of all…
We need to accept that AI "will" make mistakes. But that shouldn’t stop us.
A controlled rollout of AI in healthcare is the answer to the global doctor and nurse shortage.
We need to start talking about how to integrate AI safely.
And the sooner, the better.
More to come. Watch this space.
